Description:
Islamic Studies is a discipline with long established roots, but which must now face the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century. The scholars who are specialising in this discipline are all too aware of the need for us to use our knowledge and skills to build bridges and to provide a meeting point between the Muslim  and western worlds  of learning and to encourage scholarship and academic cooperation at this crucial time. Currently and especially in the wake of September 11, dialogues between Islam and the West are being called forth by many enlighted leaders, such as President Khatami of Iran and Dato' seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Prime Minister of Malaysia for example. These Muslim leaders also alert us to the possibility of even a greater need for Intra-Civilisational and Intra-Islamic dialogue both among Muslims and between scholars from Muslim and non-Muslims backgrounds. In such dialogues, it can be said that one of the areas that needs to be critrically looked at is the subject of the study of Islam and Muslims.
